Collections

The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses holds the largest collection of lighthouse optics anywhere in the world. Collecting began in 1994 with the establishment of the Museum, the Northern Lighthouse Board being a significant and important donor to our industrial collections.

Since 2007 the Museum’s Collection has met the Accreditation standard, our commitment to ensure that the best possible standards of care are applied to all our Collections here in Fraserburgh. Since 2007 the Museum has also had the privileged status as a holder of a Recognised Collection of National Significance. This is designated to our ‘Lighthouse Collection’ which is a rare occasion where a body’s whole collection holds the Recognition status.

The Museum also has an archival collection, including photographic slides and prints. We are committed to ensuring our Collections and Archives are accessible to the public. Whilst this access is currently impaired as we recover from Storm Arwen, we are committed to re-establishing full and appropriate access to collections.
